Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • What are diabetic shoes, and how do they differ from regular shoes?

Diabetic shoes are specially designed footwear that provides extra comfort, support, and protection for individuals with diabetes. They often feature seamless interiors, cushioned insoles, and wider toe boxes to reduce the risk of foot complications. These shoes aim to minimize pressure points and prevent injuries.

  • Why are diabetic shoes important?
Many individuals with diabetes deal with coexisting conditions such as neuropathy and poor circulation. Neuropathy can cause nerve pain as well as numbness in the feet, which increases the chance of injury to the feet. Lack of blood flow to the feet inhibits the body’s ability to repair and protect the area, causing a risk for ulcers and sores that can be difficult to heal and may lead to more serious conditions like amputation. Conditions like these make protecting the feet from injury of utmost importance. Diabetic shoes are created specifically with those concerns in mind, so you can rest easy knowing you are taking steps to guard your health.
  • How do heat mold and custom inserts benefit individuals with diabetes?
Our inserts are custom-designed insoles that are created to fit the unique shape of your feet. They provide enhanced support and comfort, reducing pressure on sensitive areas. For individuals with diabetes, these inserts can help alleviate foot pain, prevent ulcers, and enhance overall foot health.
  • What is the difference between heat mold inserts and custom mold inserts?
Heat mold inserts are designed to be molded to the shape of your feet using heat, providing a customized fit. On the other hand, custom mold inserts are created based on a 3D scan or impression of your feet, ensuring a precise and tailored fit to address specific foot conditions or abnormalities.
  • What is a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), and how does it benefit people with diabetes?
A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is a small wearable device that tracks your blood sugar levels throughout the day and night. It provides real-time data, helping individuals with diabetes manage their condition more effectively by allowing them to make timely adjustments to their diet, insulin, and other medications.
  • How often do I need to replace the sensor on my continuous glucose monitor?
Sensor lifespans vary depending on the model used. Dexcom G7 sensors can be worn for 10 days, while Abbott Freestyle Libre2 sensors can be worn for 14. When you receive your product, check the specific product details for information on sensor lifespan, and follow the manufacturer's guidelines for optimal usage.
  • What should I expect during a diabetic shoe fitting appointment?

During a diabetic shoe fitting, a certified specialist will conduct a complete foot evaluation, taking into account any unique features or conditions. After the evaluation, the fitter will discuss your specific needs, and recommend shoes that provide the necessary support and protection.

  • What qualifications do your diabetic shoe fitters have?
Our diabetic shoe fitters have certifications such as C.Ped (Certified Pedorthist) or CFts (Certified Fitter of Therapeutic Shoes). Each of our fitters is a specialist with training in foot anatomy, diabetic foot care, and footwear fitting. They have undergone specific courses to enhance their understanding of the unique needs of individuals with diabetes and are committed to providing expert guidance on selecting the right shoes for your condition.
  • Will my insurance cover the cost for diabetic shoes?
Thanks to the Therapeutic Shoe Bill enacted by congress 1993, eligible Medicare Part B beneficiaries can receive coverage for one pair of diabetic shoes and 3 sets of custom-molded inserts per calendar year. This bill aims to prevent complications related to diabetes by promoting the use of appropriate footwear. If you have private insurance, we recommend contacting your insurance company to find out what your specific plan will cover.
  • Do you accept private insurance?
We do accept certain private insurances. For questions about whether your insurance is on the list, please reach out and we will be happy to assist you.
  • Can I purchase your products directly, or do I need a prescription?
Our diabetic shoe products are available for direct purchase if insurance reimbursement is not needed, but our CGM products always require a prescription.
